Strange title, I know.
This weekend I went to an invite only ultralight fly-in. It was the first time I had been camping in over a year. Needless to say I was thrilled when we decided to go a day early. The weather was cold and on occasion pretty windy. All in all though, the sun was shining and it was a "do-able" type warm. You know, the kind of warm that you don't really feel warm, but it is passable so you call it "do-able"? Yeah, that kind of warm.
My boyfriend was so excited to go flying in the morning he could hardly sleep. It was comical. Breathe, toss, turn. Sigh, breathe, toss, turn. He was up at 5:45, fully dressed. Coffee brewing. His passion for life is so obvious when he is doing something exciting. It is a joy to see. What a wonderful human being. I believe I may have met my soulmate (but I am going to keep that a secret from him for just a bit longer).
The comical part of this weekend arose when I went up in the plane with the instructor. He flew for a bit, then told me to go ahead and fly it. Yeah, riiiiight. Let's see, pedals, stick, trim, throttle. Reminded me of a third person shooter video game. I suck at those. I mean really suck. I am a button masher. Not a coordinated button masher, just a plain old button masher. Problem is, you can't button mash a damn ultralight. I can hear the instructor chuckling in his microphone. Then laughing, then his comment of, "How about straight, just fly straight". And more laughter.
Mmhmm, I was that bad. The really sad part? When I went up the next day, I could not for the life of me remember if pulling the stick back tilted the nose up or down. Obviously, I am NOT cut out to mentally coordinate enough moves to actually fly. I looked at the instructor the second day and just laughed. I told him, "You take me for a ride, I don't believe it is a wise idea for me to try and fly this thing". He laughed right out loud and proceeded to do a stall that was the funnest thing I had done. He bragged about how I reacted the rest of the weekend. I guess the "Oh yeah!" I shouted was not what he expected out of me.
Anyhow, it was a great time.
By the way, this guy also has a boat that goes from 0 to 110 in about 7 seconds. Now THAT, I wanna drive!
